One thing I like about being a missionary in Rwanda is that no 2 days are alike. Recently, a close friend and former worker asked us if we would host her daughter’s gusaba . A gusaba (literally “to ask”) is the pre wedding ceremony in which the bride and groom are officially introduced to the families and presents are given to both families. Traditionally it was the ceremony in which the groom asks the bride’s family for the bride, and they discuss a bride price, traditionally cows. It’s the most culturally distinct part of the wedding ceremonies, the others being the civil/state wedding and the church wedding. There is a lot of back and forth/palaver/joking and it’s a fun occasion. We provided only our yard and house; the bride and her family did a lovely job putting up tents and decorating. Trust me-our yard does not usually look like this!
