King Family Newsletter, October 2010
Greetings from Shyira, Rwanda! We arrived back in Shyira last month after 6 weeks away in the US, where we had a chance to see friends, family and enjoy fellowship with our supporting churches. Highlights included: going to Hannah’s 6th grade graduation at RVA (this was the first time for Lydia and Caleb Jr to see RVA, where their sisters attend school), seeing the Kohls family in Germany on the way home (the Kohls served with us from 2006-2009); King family and Rambo family reunions, swimming almost every day to escape the sweltering heat; celebrating Caleb’s birthday multiple ways-brick oven pizza, being with his sibs and having a special dinner in Chapel Hill, to name a few. We returned in early September, dropping off Sara and Hannah at RVA on the way. We were accompanied Rebekah Carter, who will be with us to home school Caleb Jr and Lydia-yeah! We were greeted with lots of welcomes in Shyira, and plenty of rain, too!
It was heartening to see the progress that had been made in several areas while we had been gone-the Living Hope Ministries center was being expanded physically and in the support and counseling it provides to needy people here, like the handicapped children’s group seen here at the left; a couple of homes had been built under our Houses with Hope program, which provides housing for HIV positive patients; and peaceful elections had taken place in early August, with the re-election of President Paul Kagame.
We ask your prayers for a few special patients-Samuel, a 5 year old boy, who had leukemia and was treated in the US, but now gets maintenance therapy here; and for the children with heart conditions, some of whom will get life saving operations in November.
We enjoyed a recent visit from Bishop John Rucyahana and his wife, Harriet. Bishop John is no longer our Bishop, but he is the one who originally asked Caleb to come work at Shyira Hospital. With his retirement, and now that we have spent 7 years here, we are having a period of reflection of our role here in Shyira, especially with Caleb’s interest in and commitment to the hydropower project. Please pray for us, especially for clarity of vision regarding God’s will for us here in Shyira. Please also pray for the hospital, as we look for a new hospital administrator and some new doctors.
We continue to be thankful for those of you who support us financially and with your prayers. We recently enjoyed this passage from 1 Timothy 6: 18-19, “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way, they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life” There are many things we can say about our time in Rwanda, but one of the most important is that we feel that when we live here, we are taking hold of the life that is truly life, that comes from being in the will of God.
Blessings, from All of the King Family
